there never been running runner-up in an automobile category as the Ford Expedition ? The big SUV with three rows was sold by the Chevrolet Suburban / twin GMC Yukon XL for years by as much as 2: 1 margin in the segment ever-shrinking large SUV. Throw in the Tahoe and Yukon regular numbers and shipping lagging even further behind. The expedition did outsell its luxo stable of Lincoln, the browser, about 4 :. Margin 1

It may not be able to overcome the years of momentum and the iconic image of the Suburban - proclaimed in 1986 as the "National Car Of Texas." - But latest iteration of the expedition fights back

refresh the culmination 2015 Expedition drop the V-8 engine 5 , 4-liter Ford for the twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 3.5-liter power plant. With a power jump and 310-365 additional 2 mpg in fuel economy over the V-8, it is hard to argue with that decision focused on CAFE. Other 2015 updates include the controlled suspension option on our tester that offers three driving modes amortization - comfort, normal and sport -. And a redesigned center stack

Exterior changes were minor and included an expanded grid and twisted lower bumper, fog lights and taillights. Ford calls these visual updates "fresh and aggressive." Each manufacturer calls such changes "fresh and aggressive."

There may be an 8-year-old design, but aluminum wheels 22-inch polished optional and Ruby red paint bonded to the top of the edit line Platinum make war horse looks damn good. .. until you notice other expeditions in the street and realize his eyes are damn tired.

the first thing you see when you step on board is the keyless entry keypad on the doorsill. I had forgotten this feature was still there. first see a Lincoln Mk VIII Cup 190 (meaning Sajeev probably three buffers in its parts bin). Instructions on how to program the keys and the keyboard takes up 28 pages of the owner's manual but work intuitively. Open the door and the stainless steel panels power Escalade-like WHIR run down to help you climb the two steps into the cabin

The interior bulky is a mixture of old and new. Tons of outlets, cubbies and cupholders with modern satin aluminum plate clashes with ugly dark vertical slabs of plastic on the dashboard. The seats heated and cooled leather front in our tester were comfortable, but already showing signs of cracking at the edges after a few thousand miles. It's too bad Ford does not offer a panoramic roof option open because the extent of black tones made for a dark interior of our tester.

This is one of eight true size of adult vehicle with seats in the third row which fold down at the touch of a button on the back of the seats. The cargo volume is 108 cubic feet (131 cubic feet in the long wheelbase EL model) with 55 cubic feet available with the 3rd row seats folded. A low loading height with independent rear suspension makes access to the rear of a snap.

The last Ford I drove to the center infotainment MyFord Touch was a 2012 escape and it was fine if you were Rubik Cube champion, but was far too confusing for the average driver. In this redesigned system with a touchscreen 8 inches sitting high in the center console and LCD screens of 4.2 inches around the speedometer, each function is easy to find. Synchronize phones and iPods was easy and sweet multicolored glow, it emits night looks great.

One oddity I mentioned is when you place the transmission in manual mode a small tachometer appears on one of LCD screens small and it is really comical in appearance.

The central touch screen can be divided into quadrants showing phone, navigation, entertainment and climate functions. It looks like an electronic version of the car dealership old-school "Four-Square" spreadsheet fence. Maybe Ford could speed up the sales process by programming the elements of the four squares in the boxes and you can negotiate your contract with your vendor when you test drive:

Why yes, I went in the way the car business too long.

It is strange to get an SUV 5,0 pounds and not hear the roar of a V-8. You will not miss the sound when you press the gas on the EcoBoost V-6 shipping is fast, whooshing 0-60 mph in the mid-range of 6 seconds. There is turbo lag but the key motor shows great flexibility at all speeds, helped by the automatic 6-speed transmission smooth-shifting. I really loved the brakes, which are firm and easy to modulate.

With its independent rear suspension, our tester has the new continuous control suspension option with three selectable driving modes - comfort, normal and sport. You can actually feel the difference in each mode. Within the sport, slightly sloppy management tightened, the turn was much sharper and the ride much more agitated. The comfort mode can also be called the lair mode. All three parameters eased the pain of driving on roads filled crater Tucson. After playing with the settings on the first day, I found myself leaving the normal mode for the duration of the test. Who needs a setting on a school bus anyway sport?

Despite a little too much wind and road noise, shipping is an extremely comfortable long-distance cruiser.

Regarding the comparison Suburban, tests indicate the Ford refreshed offer a better ride thanks to its independent rear suspension and adjustable cushioning, slightly better acceleration and better towing capacity to 0 pounds against 8000 pounds . With the Suburban you get a 355 horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 with only a slight sacrifice fuel economy (16/23) compared to the expedition, but is accompanied by the noise of the road and less more luxurious interior with generous use of softer materials

The Suburban offers more interior room than our 119-inch wheelbase tester .; shipping 131-inch wheelbase EL is slightly more spacious than the Chevy.

Basically, shipping is the best truck and Suburban the best car.

The comparison of models with similarly shows a Suburban LTZ stickering at $ 70,215, about $ 3,0 more than a long-wheelbase Expedition Platinum.

Ford is preparing a complete overhaul of the expedition for 2017. Word is that they add a diesel engine option, which did not offer Chevrolet Suburban in since 00 (even-larger Excursion Ford discontinued after 05, had a disposition 6.0L Powerstroke diesel.) Mercedes-Benz GL is the only large SUV currently available with an oil burner motor and I think a US brand, with a full-size SUV diesel engine would sell very well.

The 2015 Ford Expedition is an old-school SUV with a new school engine. . If you are a road warrior needs a lot of room for cargo or kids and tons of towing capacity, this may be the sport-ute for you

Picks:

  • EcoBoost powerful V-6
  • third row power folding seat
  • plush, comfortable ride

Nit Pics

  • Some interior materials at low prices
  • [look
  • Even dubs 22 inches can not hide from
  • not pano roof available

Wife Sez:. I like to extend the footsteps

Ford provided the vehicle for a week, a tank of gas and insurance
